formal vs. informal

so I'm trying to write "I want to learn Ithkuil" in Ithkuil, but how do I ensure that my starting clause "iub" is correctly translated as "a desire, a need" and not "a wish, a hope"?

also yes that's as far as I have gotten so far lol

@sakawi

which ithkuil version is this? neither b root nor b affix look like "desire/wish" in v4 by ithkuil community dictionary (although I may be checking the wrong data).

I'm using the lexicon straight from Ithkuil.net. Here's a screenshot of the entry:

oh! that looks like v3, which i'm not as familiar with. still, it looks fine at a surface-level, since you inflected for informal/formal, stem, and pattern, and marking all of those on a word is what gives it that specificity.

your choice of iub looks like S3-Pat2-DYN-INF, which would roughly be "(to be) the feeling of desiring something" (may be mistranslated because I'm only familiar with v4, and I don't know what DYN does). although you may want just eib, without the complementary stem, since you're referring to the desire overall (including the object, learning ithkuil), not just the feeling of desire (which would likely exclude any object from consideration).

(FYI, from what I know, most Ithkuilists use V4 now. V4 superseded V3 in early 2023)

Oh, really? Then where can I find V4? And exactly how different is it?

V4 is as found on https://ithkuil.net/, referred to as New Ithkuil.
The V3 introduction was moved to https://www.ithkuil.net/00_intro.html in 2023, but all of its pages are still up and accessible from the introduction.
V4 is meant to be easier to learn and have a wider range of expression. I think it overhauls most vocabulary and changes many grammar categories, but the concept/idea/feel is still similar and it still has the long words and narrowed-down expressions. I'm not really an Ithkuilist, but of my friends who are all use V4.

Ithkuil.net? But that's the one I'm already using!

But then when I go onto this one, it's a PDF instead of a site, so...

Guess I was using V3. Whoops!

So it should be GV-S3-CSV, or ugve instead.
Sorry abt that!
