Hosting your conlang on conlangs, from space!
So, you want to host a conlang community or project on conlangs, from space!. Here’s some expectations you should have (as well as our expectations) and steps to take towards getting everything set up for your project.
An important distinction: This is not about the Workshop category or related subcategories (i.e. Conlanging), this is about the Conlangs category, which is a completely separate category for hosting established constructed languages. You can freely post about your personal conlang in Conlanging! This is only about getting your project promoted to a more “official” status in CFS.
Expectations
What should you expect from CFS?
- Moderation for your community, both from the site staff and yourself. You will be given adequate permissions to manage and moderate your community.
- Static page hosting for your community and project, based off forum posts you can make and edit.
- An existing, broader community that will also support your project.
- Visibility and easy archiving.
- Given that you maintain enough time and effort, you may even get your own site category dedicated to your language.
- All of this is free of charge! Of course, you can donate to us to help maintain CFS.
What does CFS expect from you?
- A reasonable amount of interest from you in your community or project. This means you can’t disappear or drop the project after a couple weeks.
- Some time spent on the forum and interacting with the community before requesting a dedicated space. This is to ensure that you have the dedication, and that we have the trust in you.
- Supplements to your project, such as an instant messaging platform (e.g. Discord, Matrix) for speaking the language, a public dictionary (spreadsheet or other application), &c. We can’t host everything related to your project as some things are technically infeasible or unrealistic to host on CFS.
- A level of maturity and completeness for your project, to where it can be reasonably spoken.
- Generally speaking, the requirements for your language are quite similar to what we have for the language tag requests for established conlangs.
Process
- Message the site moderators through the private message feature and tell us that you want to host your project on CFS and let us know of any accommodations you’ll be requesting. We’ll ask you some questions and you should be prepared to answer them.
- If you’re approved, a testing period will be granted to your project to gauge activity before your project may be upgraded to a full, potentially permanent category. During this time, you will be expected to facilitate discussion in or about your language, teaching, and posting resources or media in or about your language in Other. You will also receive (if you don’t have one already) a language tag.
- After some time, you may be upgraded to a full category. If your project is still small or doesn’t have enough activity, you may not be upgraded to a full category, and instead you’ll still be in the Other category. If you receive a category, you’ll receive permissions to moderate and manage your category separately from the site moderators! If not, that’s fine. If we see enough interest, we’ll move your conlang to a proper category.
What happens if you do not maintain adequate activity or interest? Posts related to your project will be moved to the Conlanging category and your language tag will be moved to the “Workshop language” tag group. You can always request again, and if we see activity restored, then we’ll start the process all over again.
Defunct, deprecated, or dead languages will be moved to a “deprecated” category in Conlangs (which hasn’t been created yet as of writing this page).
